About the Northwest Youth Music Association

What We Do

The Northwest Youth Music Association (NYMA) supports programs in the performing arts for youth of ages 8 to 22 in the states of Washington and Oregon. NYMA believes that the ideal program is one that significantly challenges youth to excel to new personal heights. The teen years are critical years that shape one’s adulthood. Intensive competitive activities provide a vehicle for young people to realize the value of hard work, teamwork, and perseverance while on a path towards achieving their own inner excellence.

There may be activities provided by schools and communities, most of which are likely athletic programs. However, programs in the performing arts are often scarce. This is particularly true after school, on weekends, and during the summer months.

It is NYMA’s goal to fill the gaps in youth programs. To provide opportunities and experiences that would not otherwise be available—such experiences that may prove to be positive defining moments in a young person’s life.

Our History

The Northwest Youth Music Association grew out of the Cascades Booster Club and the Cascades Youth Music Association. The organization has been in existence for over 40 years, with roots dating back to 1957. The NYMA is governed by an volunteer Board of Directors. Charter Members elect the Board of Directors, validate changes to the Bylaws, and provide oversight to the Board of Directors. Additionally, there is an Advisory Board that provides support and guidance to the Board of Directors.

The 100+ contributing members/volunteers of NYMA form the backbone of the organization. The members, along with parents, alumni, fans, and supporters contribute both financially and with their time, making these activities possible. We cannot overlook the dedicated teachers and instructors of NYMA whose value far exceeds their pay.
